About the Comets
Club Philosophy
Kew Junior Football Club (KJFC) seeks to provide all players with a safe and caring environment where they can gain maximum enjoyment and development at training and in games. It also provides parents with an opportunity to be actively involved with their children’s sport and participate in club activities. Fundamental to achieving that objective is:
- Enjoyment
- Encouragement
- Challenge
- Responsibility
- Achievement
The Kew Junior Football Club welcomes local girls to the Club and is proud of the contribution of female players in recent times. Consistent with our policy and principles, KJFC encourages girls to participate and share the companionship, encouragement, challenge, responsibility and achievement that derives from team membership in our great game. KJFC applies the age limitations as set out in the AFL and YJFL policies on girls playing in mixed teams.
History of the Kew Comets
The Gold and Brown colours of the Kew Junior Football Club have been worn on the playing fields of Melbourne for a long time. The first club to have borne the name of the Kew Junior Football Club (KJFC) is known to have been in existence as early as 1879 and to have participated in a number of different competitions, all of junior status, Little is known about the history and origins however, it is at least arguable that both the current Kew Junior and Senior football clubs can trace their origins back to this time. It was in 1898 that the club was invited to join the Metropolitan Junior Football Association. In 1899, having satisfied the MJFA authorities as to its viability, Kew was formally admitted to the MJFA, only to withdraw after two predominantly disappointing seasons. The club later participated in at least three, and possibly more, junior and district competitions, attaining a modest level of success, especially during the late 1920s and early 1930s, winning premierships in 1927, 1929, 1931-2 and 1934.
Hanging in the Victoria Park club rooms is a photo of the first Kew grand final team to win a premiership flag in 1927. Clearly identified on the flag is the Kew Junior Football Club (KJFC). Kew, both junior and senior clubs, have continued to enjoy success both on and off the field for well over a 100 years.
The most recent incarnation of the Kew Junior Football club was formed in 1971 as part of the Hawthorn District Football Competition. Recently this competition was amalgamated into the Yarra District Football League.
Club Song
We're a happy team at Kew, boys/girls
We're the mighty fighting browns
We love our club and we play to win
Riding the bumps with a grin
At Kew boys/girls
Come and see us all a striving
Teamwork is the thing that counts
It's one for all and all for one
The way we play at Kew boys/girls
We are the mighty fighting browns
